Illustration as cultural language: expanding visual storytelling across media and disciplines

At Casa IED New York, IED alumni Emiliano Ponzi and Olimpia Zagnoli join Nicholas Blechman, Creative Director of The New Yorker, for a conversation on how illustration continues to evolve beyond the page, shaping culture, ideas and public discourse.

Part of the Zig Zag Festival — a cultural exchange connecting Italy and the United States through visual storytelling — the event explores illustration as a language that extends across publishing, branding, public space and digital media. Moving beyond representation, the conversation reflects on the power of images to build narratives, communicate complex ideas and engage diverse audiences.

As part of the Plural Intelligences framework, the event contributes to an ongoing exploration of how different forms of creative knowledge intersect to shape contemporary culture. Through their diverse practices, Ponzi, Zagnoli and Blechman offer perspectives on visual storytelling as a tool for interpretation, connection and cultural exchange.

The conversation is part of Casa IED's public program in New York, developed to foster dialogue across creative communities and expand IED's international cultural presence.
