The Bachelor of Arts in Communication Design at IED Cagliari trains communication designers capable of combining strategic thinking with creative execution to design distinctive brand identities, campaigns, and communication plans. Through theoretical lessons, practical workshops, and real projects, students learn to transform brand and company objectives into memorable and engaging communication actions and content, integrating both digital and traditional media.

Structure and contents:

The IED programme spans three years, integrating design with cultural knowledge, dialogue with professionals, technical skill development, and the use of innovative tools.

Year One: Establishes the foundations of design thinking and the project process – from understanding a brief to generating creative ideas. Students explore the basics of graphic design and use key software for image and video design: InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, as well as newer editing tools such as Canva and CapCut. Initial skills in content design are introduced. Courses also cover social and cultural phenomena linked to media and current consumption trends, alongside basic notions of semiotics and design methodology

Year Two: Advances both creative and strategic skills. Two major projects are undertaken:

- A complete branding development, from defining a brand’s visual identity (logo, coordinated image, graphic style) to its verbal-strategic identity (positioning, tone of voice, payoff, storytelling).

- The creation of a creative concept for an integrated advertising campaign.

Students explore content management for web and social media, while theoretical subjects include communication sociology, the mass media system, and phenomenology of contemporary arts.

Year Three: Focuses on developing a complex project that simulates real professional practice, culminating in the thesis. The thesis project combines strategic and creative work, covering all phases of communication design: research, objective definition, creative concept, visual identity development, content production, and campaign planning across media. Projects may originate from students’ own ideas or collaborations with companies.

Special attention is given to video design, with outputs tailored to different formats – from video storytelling to commercials and social media reels. Work is carried out in teams to replicate agency dynamics, also developing organisational soft skills. Courses further explore marketing communication systems, marketing management, and effective project presentation.
